Frequently asked
The questions we get most
On provenance, kernel grades, storage, shipping and wholesale. If something is missing, ask us.
Where do your walnuts come from?
From our own orchards in Mandraki Sintikis, Serres, between Lake Kerkini and the Belles mountain range. We grow them, harvest them, dry them, crack them and pack them ourselves. We do not trade other growers' nuts.
Which varieties do you grow?
Walnuts: mainly Chandler, with Franquette, Fernor, Hartley, Pedro, Fernette and Lara from our older plantings. Hazelnuts: mainly Ennis, with Tonda di Giffoni, Romana, Lange and Halls Giant.
What is the difference between halves, quarters and eighths?
It is the size of the kernel piece, not the quality. The half (1/2, the "butterfly") is the whole half of the kernel and is harder to extract intact, so it costs more. The quarter (1/4) is the other half of it. The eighth (1/8) is the crumb. Nutritionally they are identical — choose by whether the walnut will be seen or will go into a dough.
Why are the amber and dark kernels cheaper?
A darker kernel fetches a lower price on appearance, not on taste. In our experience the amber kernel tastes better than the pale one. We hand-sort the darkest grade to separate the kernels that taste of something from the ones that do not. We will send you a mix to judge for yourself.
How should I store nuts, and for how long?
Kernels want an airtight container somewhere cool and dark — ideally the fridge, where they keep for months without going rancid. Nuts in shell keep far longer, which is why we recommend them if you plan to store them.
Which payment methods do you accept?
Bank transfer, and cash on delivery (€2.50 fee). We do not accept card payments.
What does shipping cost and how long does it take?
Courier anywhere in Greece: €3.50, delivered in 1–3 working days — island addresses can take a day longer. Free shipping on orders over €60. Collection from the farm is free by arrangement.
Can I return an order?
Yes, within 14 days of receiving it. Sealed foodstuffs that have been opened are excluded, for hygiene reasons. If something arrives damaged or wrong, send us a photograph within 48 hours and we replace it at our cost.
Do you sell wholesale?
Yes — every grade is available in bulk for patisseries, bakeries, restaurants and delicatessens. We pack in sacks or to your own specification, and send a sample before any commitment. Write to info@karydi.gr.
Are your products organic?
We are not certified organic. We work with cover crops that fix atmospheric nitrogen, reduced fertiliser, and interventions only where scouting the insects and the weather shows they are needed. We would rather tell you exactly what we do than claim a certification we do not hold.
What is walnut butter and what is in it?
One ingredient: our own walnuts, ground. No additives, no preservatives, no sugar. It is suitable for a vegan diet and contains no gluten. The oil separates and rises naturally — stir before use.
Can I visit the farm?
Yes, our orchards are open to visitors. Get in touch to arrange it. We are close to the Kerkini wetland, Mt Belles, the forts of the Metaxas Line and the thermal springs at Agkistro.
