Philosophy

Our philosophy fits in one sentence: year after year, we try to supply you with a healthy, nutritious, good-tasting walnut, grown out of healthy soil on properly formed trees.

It sounds simple. In practice it takes time, care, love and respect for nature to hold all of that together.

What a nutritious walnut means

It means that for it to reach you, we have to attend to the smallest detail of plant protection and orchard nutrition. There is no shortcut here.

What healthy soil means

Free of unwanted chemicals. Rich in beneficial microorganisms, fungi and bacteria. Shaped by cover crops that fix atmospheric nitrogen and feed it back into our soil — which in turn means less fertiliser.

The same practice helps sequester carbon, something already being encouraged elsewhere in the EU because it has been shown to contribute enormously to restoring environmental balance.

Observation instead of a schedule

We watch insect populations, the weather, and how both act on the local microclimate. We intervene only where it is necessary, with the means most friendly to the environment and to our trees. We spray because it is needed, not because the calendar says so.

The place

Through our products and our orchards — which are open to visitors — our purpose, and our wish, is to draw attention to this place, its people and the range of things worth seeing here.

Among them: the protected wetland of Lake Kerkini, with its extraordinary range of wildlife — the emblematic flamingo, the heron, the pelican, the water buffalo and the jackal; Mt Belles; the forts of the Metaxas Line; the thermal springs at Agkistro; and the Lailias ski centre.

The flamingo in our mark is not decoration. It is our neighbour.
